My Boys are 19 months apart, I am 5'9" and our family does lots of walking, traveling (car and airline). We have a large Standard Poodle that rides in car (Acura MDX) My goal: ONE STROLLER
After having way too many strollers (details in bit) and disliking most of them for some reason or another (except Bob Revolution Single), I decided to fork up the money and invest in the Phil and Teds Explorer. I live in Portland, OR and do a lot of walking on and off paths (big key factor). I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED my Bob Revolution Single, but needed a double when my second got too hard to carry in the carrier for long distances. My final decision was between the Britax B Ready and the Phil and Teds Explorer (will explain below).
Strollers I Have Owned and Reasons Why I Disliked Them:
JOOVY CABOOSE ULTRALIGHT - small wheels and mainly, I thought was hard to maneuver especially with the position of handle GRACO DUO SIT AND STAND - Maneuvers better than Joovy above, but really long and still small tires.
BOB REVOLUTION DUALLIE - Excellent Maneuverability, but huge and heavy, took up most room in back of MDX, My two boys were constantly bugging each other and I did not end up running with it like anticipated because so heavy and kids would start to get at each other, I think due to boredom after extended amount of time.
PHIL AND TEDS SPORT - FYI, I got this after my beloved Bob Revolution Single, so in my mind, nothing compared, and I think I was a little harsh on the Sport when I had it. I HATED the foot brake. If you walk a dog or want to go into a store or have a toddler that is walking and likes to dilly-dally, I would put the extra money into a Phil and Teds with out this brake. I, many times, had to reach down and do it by hand. I would kick the back some when walking fast, and it was not nearly as easy to maneuver as the Bob Single.
BABY JOGGER CITY ELITE SINGLE WITH JUMP SEAT- I felt it was too wide compared to my Bob R. (the back tires would catch on things because of the width) and the jump seat made it top heavy and was really close to the main seat.
Why Phil and Teds Explorer VS Britax B Ready?
1. WIDTH-Can't beat how narrow and light it is for a double stroller. I am constantly going through little stores with narrow spaces between clothing racks, bumpy sidewalks with uneven concrete and on little narrow paths in the woods where the Britax B Ready would be too wide. I am always taking my stroller in and out of the car and The Britax B Ready's weight with the doubles kit is 36 pounds and 28 without! I learned my lesson with the Bob Duallie. The Phil and Teds is 23lbs without and about 26 (not for sure, but definitely lighter) with the doubles kit.
2. The AIR FILLED TIRES are great for going down curbs, bumpy paths, cobblestone streets etc... I go over lots of terrain where the B Ready would not do so well.
Why I chose the Explorer over any other Phil and Teds models I researched?
1. The Brake. There are a number of complaints on the SPORT brake, The DASH is better, but you have to drop the handle bar down causing your drinks to spill or bag to fall off handle. The VIBE, the brake is on the handle and gets in the way when pushing causing sudden stop.
What I Am Willing to Put Up With (Because NO Stroller Is Perfect) and I Wish This Stroller Had:
1. Little Space in basket with doubles seat attached (typical for this type stroller) but needs easier access like B Ready
2. Needs pockets on back of main seat like Dash
3. Needs slightly more of a longer handle like the Bob Revolution Single (this would make stroller more comfortable to push for taller people)
4. Wish the doubles seat folded when attached.
5. Wish there was a place in stroller to store doubles seat when not in use

My husband and I were not going to get a stroller at first then our little one began to grow...so I started my research on strollers. In my head I imagined a ugly piece of equipment that would get stuck or just feel like toucher pushing around. Then I found the Explorer (did purchase it somewhere else for less). When it arrived the tires were flat (I was warned in the reviews I had read so not surprised) so I ran down to the gas station and filled them up. It was not hard at all to put together.....that is except to figure out how to make the front wheel rotate and not lock (had to call Phil and Ted's help line but they were great). I then put my little man in and we went for a stroll around the house...it was great!. So great that I packed it up in the car and we drove down to the park for another stroll....it was great. The next day my husband wanted to try it out so I checked the tires (read to do this as well) and one was low so hubby aired it up and it blew up......hmmmm. Easy enough because the local bike show had tubes for it. Long story short this stroller has been great, it glides well, it fits through the doors easily and it looks nice to boot.

Several years ago I saw a woman jogging with a Phil&Teds Sport stroller with doubles kit. Never having seen anything like it, I knew I wanted that stroller when I started my family. So while pregnant with my 1st child, I ordered the Phil&Teds Sport. I loved it mostly, but had a few complaints. Several months ago I realized that Phil&Teds had just come out with a new stroller that fixed all the complaints I had with the Sport. I promptly sold my Sport and purchased the Explorer and have been thrilled with my stroller ever since. Here are the things I love about the stroller:
- it's a jogger stroller just in case you might ever want to run with it (front wheel can swivel or lock)
- it has substantial wheels that will easily roll over any terrain (and glides like air on smooth surfaces)
- it has a second seat that can be added when you have a second kid******* (prob the best feature!!!!- you won't have to buy a new stroller when you have your 2nd kid!!)
- even with the second seat on, the stroller is only the size of a single stroller, so you're not this massive moving thing trying to get through a store or park.
- it folds (easily!) almost flat & locks (some don't lock, so they're floppy, making it hard to get in and out of a car)
- the handle moves so that whoever is pushing can put the handle where it is most comfortable for them (this is especially good for tall people)
- the seat is padded, removable, and washable
- you can buy an adaptor that allows you to put a car seat on the stroller. The doubles kit can be used at the same time.
- it has an awesome sun shade that "follows" the sun so you move the shade wherever you need it to block the sun. The 2nd seat also has its own sunshade.
- it has a great basket underneath. This basket is where the 2nd kid's feet go though, so once you're using the stroller for two kids, you lose a lot of the basket storage, but to me its totally worth it to have a stroller that holds 2 kids but isn't massive. I solved that issue (lack of storage when used with 2 kids) by getting a diaper bag back pack.
- the brake is very very easy to use (a huge improvement over the Sport)
I honestly don't have a single complaint about the stroller. The only negative thing to be aware of is the lack of storage when used with two kids. But like I mentioned, this con is really just a trade off for having two kids fit in the space of a single stroller. It's just something to be prepared for.
Finally- Phil&Teds customer service is fabulous! When I first received my new stroller, it came with a deformed wheel. I immediately called Phil&Teds about it. Since the stroller was still so new, they didn't have replacement parts yet, so they took a wheel off their demo stroller at their office and sent that straight to me. I was incredibly impressed.
Every time I use my stroller, I think about how wonderful it is. Every time I see a mom struggling to push her massive double stroller through a store, I think about how awesome my stroller is. I can't tell you enough how wonderful it is. And how unique it is. It's worth every bit of its price tag!
